Description
In the summer of 1873, the U.S. Army officially adopted the Colt Single Action Army revolver, marking a significant upgrade from the older Model 1860 percussion-cap revolvers. This new revolver quickly gained popularity among soldiers due to its impressive stopping power, high precision, and ease of maintenance. The Single Action Army soon became a staple not only for military personnel but also for civilians, law enforcement, and outlaws who recognized its superior design. Even as the Wild West era transitioned into a more settled time, the legacy of the Single Action Army continued to thrive. Notably, Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders carried these revolvers during their famous charge at San Juan Hill, while General George S. Patton chose to carry one during World War II, despite the increasing use of semiautomatic pistols.
Today, the legacy of the Colt Single Action Army is honored by Uberti's Model 1873 Hunter Revolvers. These modern handguns replicate the original's aesthetic with remarkable attention to detail, while also offering two significant enhancements. The first is the addition of a picatinny rail, which allows users to mount contemporary optics such as red dot sights and magnified scopes, making these revolvers suitable for target shooting and hunting. The second enhancement is a retractable firing pin, which improves safety; in the original design, the firing pin rests on a cartridge's primer when fully loaded, making it unsafe to carry with all six chambers filled. The only safe way to carry an original Single Action Army is with the hammer resting on an empty chamber.
